Names in their original script
Real import-to-PDF tests cover Russian Cyrillic, Armenian, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi Devanagari and Thai. Names are preserved rather than transliterated. Tests include family diagrams, narrative, sources and the name index; this is not a guarantee for every character or language.
Character forms and language
For shared East Asian characters, choose Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese or Korean forms when setting up the book. This controls typography. The website and generated book headings and narrative are available in English, Spanish and French. Names and supplied source text remain unchanged. Right-to-left editions and vertical text are not offered. Review name ordering in your preview.
If a character cannot be printed
The renderer stops before checkout if a character has no available glyph. Review the error and contact the operator about script coverage. We do not replace unknown letters with boxes in a ready edition. Font coverage alone does not certify cultural naming order or every complex-script layout; inspect your real preview.
Versions and encoding
The upload must explicitly declare GEDCOM 5.5 or 5.5.1 and an encoding. Tested encodings are UTF-8, ASCII, ANSEL, ANSI interpreted as Latin-1, and explicit CP1252 or WINDOWS-1252. Ambiguous ANSI control bytes are rejected. GEDCOM 7, UTF-16, ZIP archives and missing declarations are unsupported. Re-export; editing a header label does not convert a file.
Size and included records
Up to 20 MiB and 10,000 imported people. One edition includes at most 2,000 people, eight generations and 300 pages. Private records are excluded; living or uncertain people are redacted by default. Notes and photographs are omitted. A smaller branch often makes a more readable book.
What has actually been tested
Our compatibility audit processed all 103 files in a pinned public GEDCOM sample collection: 86 produced books and previews, and 17 were rejected with specific reasons. Fictional regression fixtures test privacy and varied scripts. Those results are evidence for the tested files and branches, not universal GEDCOM compatibility.
